Türkiye’nin toplum yaşamında ve bunun yansıması olarak Türk düşüncesinde en önemli konulardan biri Batılılaşma konusudur. Osmanlı’nın son döneminden başlayarak etkisi günümüze kadar devam eden bir süreç olarak Batılılaşma toplumun genelini etkileyen ve her türlü toplumsal olayın tepede düğümlendiği bir olaydır. Bu anlamda Türk sosyolojisinin de en önemli konularından biridir. Baykan Sezer, sosyolojimizin kuram sahibi isimlerinden biri olarak konuyu gündemine almış sürece “Batıcılaşma” adını vererek kapsamlı bir değerlendirme yapmıştır. Ona göre Batıcılaşma, Batı’ya benzemek değil, onunla taraftar olmaktır. Tarihsel gelişim içinde bu sürecin aşamalarını aktaran Sezer, üç aşamada incelediği süreci askeri alanda, idari alanda ve toplumsal alanda yapılan yenilikler şeklinde açıklamaktadır. Her şeyden önce Batıcılaşmayı toplumsal çıkarlarımız açısından değerlendiren Sezer, bu açıdan olaya sorgulayıcı bir bakışla bakmakta ve Batıcılaşmanın sorunlarımızı çözmek yerine artırdığını savunmaktadır.
One of the most important issues in Turkey's social life and as a reflection of this in Turkish thought is the issue of Westernization. Westernization, which is a process that started from the last period of the Ottoman Empire and continues until today, is an event that affects the society in general and all kinds of social events are tied to the top. In this sense, it is one of the most important subjects of Turkish sociology. Baykan Sezer, as one of the theoretical figures of our sociology, made a comprehensive evaluation of the process that put the issue on his agenda, calling it "Westernization". According to him, Westernization does not mean being similar to the West, but supporting it. Sezer, who conveys the stages of this process in historical development, explains the process he examines in three stages as innovations in the military field, administrative field and social field. Sezer, who first of all evaluates Westernization in terms of our social interests, looks at the event from a questioning perspective and argues that Westernization increases our problems rather than solving them.
