From XIX. Century to these days Western world sovereignty has existed with certain changes. The concept of social change that is valid in Western and Non-Western societies had to define its main agents and organisation in this context in every period as well. These relations/changes that were started under the own leadership of the West have been defined as “universal”. Because it included not only the reorganization of the West but also the reorganization of the Eastern societies. The West’s organizing of superiority and sovereignty relations that it provided with its own order is currently named as abstractions such as globalisation, new world order, localisation. In this study we will discuss this subject and its bases.

The prevailing trend in social sciences is to explain the historical events by the inner contradictions of each society. As a conclusion, the political and military history studying the international relations of societies in a global context has lost ground and explanations about the social development have been restricted by the inner relationships of each society. Without understanding the imperial policy suggested by Napoleon for the global domination of the West, it is impossible to comprehend the meaning of the French Revolution and why that revolution required such a man like him. Likewise, we can’t make sense of France’s invading Egypt with an armed force consisting of thousands of soldiers just when the lands of France itself were under a serious threat immediately after the revolution.

In The Numidian Kingdom that was established in North Africa, after King Micipsa’s death in 118 BC, the struggle for throne between Jugurtha and his two step brothers Hiempsal and Adherbal, was led to a civil war and Rome was involved as arbitrator between the conflicting parties. In this process, the massacre that was made in Cirta and especially the democide of all the Italian merchants in this city, was resulted in The Roman Republic’s declaration of war against The Numidian Kingdom. The war known as “Bellum Iugurthinum” , that occured between 111-104 BC, was lasted seven years, and resulted in defeat of Numidia. In this work, the causes and the process of war was discussed by treating the war itself as a social fact, and the consequences for both The Numidian Kingdom and The Roman Republic was examined. As a result of the war, Numidia was divided into two parts. The comparison of the war booty and the expenses made by Rome in this process was debated by scholars. In this work, analyses made for the expenses of war was included, and the outcomes such as expression of social opposition, professionalisation and politicization of the army was discussed.

It is obvious that within the Eastern and Muslim world Turkey is a country that has the closest relations with Europe. This somewhat arises from the geographical condition. In the past, Turkey was even contiguous with Europian countries. We are not going to mention the matter of events that has come from the past and continued till today. But as every civilization and every reign starts with a historical past, it is normal to encounter the trace of the past that reveals itself in the presence of today’s Turkey. The most obvious character of crusades was “religious”. We are the ones that assume the conflicts between religions as a normal event in the style of “struggle to live” in life. Because religious credit is so susceptible to that sort of things in a period that people were not became conscious as today. However, the thoughts of the Western nations after they became conscious seem to have the similar character.

THE SOURCES OF ANTİ-COMMUNİSM IN TURKEY - 2: PRELİMİNARY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE AGENDA OF THOUGHT BEİNG DETERMİNED BY THE POLİTİCAL CONJUNCTURE

The interest towards the republican era –especially towards the single-party period- has risen due to the recent daily political disputes. The interest, which centered on the ottoman history in the 1950s, gravitated towards the late history starting in the 1990s. And it specifically focused on the single-party administration. But this interest is suitable in regard to the political and social tendencies recently. The interest towards the political and social events of the recent history takes shape according to the Turkish policy which is profoundly sensitive about the political tendencies which dominates the world and about the developments in the West. Consequently, some political and social events are brought to the fore and others are off the table. And in the discussions, the conditions which determine the discussion about the political and social events in question are not accentuated sufficiently. The international relationship between the historical and social events is scarcely correlated. All the social events are approached as if they were the result of the internal dynamic of Turkey. It is really difficult to understand why the highbrows, who think that any political and social event occurring in a faraway place around the world will immediately have its effect on all the world’s societies due to globalization, put all the responsibility on the internal dynamics while they evaluate a true to life historical event. Some think tanks, depending upon Daily political debate, judge some of the political and social events in the late history, whereas they put forward some of the events in order to legitimate the ideas they advocate historically. These people ignore the fact that the intellectual tendencies that they discuss in detail are also the result of some certain historical and sociological conditions just like their own thoughts. While they blame some of the movement of thought of being the continuation of the single-party period and out of date, they forget that their own existence is the result of the internal and external conditions of the republic.

Glocalization is a contemporary paradigm which claims that it solved the problems caused by globalization. The purpose of this paradigm is to provide the world stability, peace and global prosperity. Cities are the places where the glocalization emerged. For this reason, today’s cities rapidly transform into a glocal form. The full impact of this trend is felt in Turkish cities. However, whether this trend will bring stability or chaos to the glocal city of the non-Western world is still a question. In this study, the transformation of the city, the administrative tutelage, participation in city administration, city diplomacy and issues alike which glocalization claimed to solve are evaluated.

An earthquake is not only a physical nature event but also a sociological phenomenon as it directly affects human and societies’ lives. An individual, in the traumatic chaos occasion created by an earthquake, needs to make sense of what happened. In terms of questioning himself, his life and society, he perceives the earthquake as a poetic justice of punishment from God due to the sins committed by individuals. This explanation does not make any sense in terms of positivist paradigm. However, it makes sense in hermeneutics (interpretative) paradigm. Interpretative paradigm focuses on how the people make sense and build their own social realities. The theological and metaphysical explanation of the earthquake is also important. In this paper, the social-psychological and sociological dimensions of explaining earthquake are analysed.

This article aims to make a succinct analysis of John Urry’s acclaimed book, Global Complexity. Considering the book as a worthwhile attempt to understand globalization processes through the optics of complexity or chaos theories, the article, however, tries to problematize the basic assumptions in Urry’s formulation. Urry’s distinction between global networks and global flows based on his rendering of the latter as having “escape points” in contrast to the authoritarian nature of the former is prone to discussion. Another problem arises at the point where John Urry attempts to refuse the reductionist theories of globalization. Although he seems to point out the overarching qualities of globalization within the realm of global networks, he fails to take into account the impact of the neoliberal ideology and to link economic aspects of globalization with cultural aspects where his seemingly clear-cut distinction between global networks and global flows appears to erode.

This article aims to analyze the value of the internet as a source of knowledge and information in the so-called “information age” and evaluate the advantages and disadvantages, reliability and limitations of internet knowledge from a critical point of view. In recent years, relations between knowledge, hegemony and power have been the main issues in social sciences. Today, it is important to examine the hegemonic relations between the internet and information which is spread through the internet on “global network society.” In this respect, the main contradiction which has to be analyzed is the disinforming natüre of the internet knowledge in the “information age.” Another problem which is related to this is the pollution of knowledge arising from the information overload through the internet.

Architectural mosque designs are vital to monitor and indicate the direction of the transformation of the social identity. The architectural styles of mosques in Turkey give an outline about the changes in religion that is one of the fundamental components of social identity. Apart from conventional architecturalstyles, in order to create a modern mosque style in the reproduction of conventional Classical period of Ottoman architecture, there is a third mosque architecture “shanty mosques” which are not based on any architectural form, custom and background besides “elitist mosque” as a consequence of eclectic approach. Mosques in different places of various cities in Turkey are located on international ways, which points out the social influence and rises in importance. In this study, five mosque samples that are located on the international way, E-5(D100) Motorway are chosen between the zones in Şirinevler District and Silivri District in Istanbul: Avcılar Hacı Ahmet Tükenmez Mosque, Deniz Köşkler Mosque, Florya Yeni Mosque, Cen- giz Topel Mosque, a small mosque in the exit of subway in Yenibosna. Some certain evaluations were made about the direction of social change and identity of society via architectural distortion. All the characteristics of mosques on E-5 Motorway in Istanbul are the expressions of distortion in identity expression. Corruption in identity expression does not derive from not only architectural exterior but functional distortion of the aforementioned mosques. The architecture and function of the mosques on E-5 Motorway in Istanbul are converted into caricatured mosques. Those are far away representations of identity of civilization and just caricatured exhibition of falsification in Islamic sense and corrupted identity of society.

The effects of fast food consumption on the local food culture and food consumption habits in big cities deserves an overview. In the West, the picture of big family meeting around the dinner table was distructed in line with the distruction of the social structure of the family during the industrial revolution. Similar to the social changes that took place in the West, the changes in the working hours as well as the work places, effects of the distruction of the big families, the dissynchronization of the daily routines of the family members, etc. resulted in that the family reunion around the dinner table which is a part of the traditional food consumption habits is realized places other than the home. Furthermore, this has became a readly accepted ordinary event. Within this context, the consumer has the inclination to choose the fast food brands which are offered as the fastest solution and as the just right places for the happy family. According to the simulation theory of Jean Baudrillard, the global food culture is a piece of the system osymulacrs. Following Baudrillard, David Harvey states that the geography of the globe is experienced through the dominant symulacrs in the global food sector. In Turkey, fast food restaurants are about to be the symulacrs of the happy family house. One solution for this can be the revival of the real local food on the family table.

Nowadays it has become more difficult to maintain the exploitation of the West and sharing the depleted world’s goods. The struggle of world sovereignty of the civilizations has changed periodically and apparently the Western civilization has a difficulty to keep this sovereignty in the present time. Keeping the limited sources by force of arms is both costly and it arouses hatred among the other. Besides, deceiving the world for profit is not as easy as it was in the past. Keeping the colonial societies through sociocultural means is less costly and doesn’t draw attention of the rivals. In this respect, the new strategies of the Western civilization that created the colonization should be observed carefully. The mentioned “new strategy” indicates the change of the form, the purpose of the cultural elements that hadn’t been brought forward or whose purpose wasn’t essentialy colonisation and the use of these cultural elements for political, social, economic profits. Lots of cultural elements can be used for this purpose, but the most remarkable and significant one among these elements is Heavy Metal as a kind of music.
