Doğan Ergun Türkiye'de sosyal bilimlerde yöntem alanında boşluğu dolduran akademisyenlerden biridir. Türk sosyolojisine yaptığı katkılarından biri de Türk üniversitelerinde o zamana kadar yeterince önemsenmeyen bilgi sosyolojisi alt dalının ders programı çerçevesinde işlenmesine ön ayak olmasıdır. Ergun, entelektüel gelişimi boyunca liberalizme, Ortodoks sosyalizme ve Batıcılığa olduğu kadar, muhafazakarlığa ve otoriter milliyetçiliğe de mesafeli ve eleştirel bir tutumla yaklaşmıştır. Sosyal bilimlerde pozitivist, evrenselci ve aşırı nomotetik yaklaşımlarla arasına mesafe koymuştur. Yöntem sorununu sosyal bilimlerin merkezine yerleştiren Ergun, yöntemi kurama önceleyen, kuramı ikincilleyen bir bakış açısına sahiptir.
Dogan Ergun is one of academics that fills the gap in the field of method in the social sciences in Turkey. One of his contributions to Turkish sociology is to pave the way for the study of the sociology of knowledge sub-branch which has not been given enough importance in Turkish universities until then. Throughout his intellectual development, Ergun has approached liberalism, Orthodox socialism and Westernism as well as conservatism and authoritarian nationalism with a distant and critical approach. He has distanced himself from positivist, universalist and extreme nomotetic approaches in social sciences. Ergun, who places the problem of method at the center of social sciences and he has a perspective that prioritizes the method and subordinates the theory.
