Kemal Tahir, her şeyden önce büyük bir romancıdır. Kemal Tahir düşün yaşamında toplumumuzun Batı’dan farklılığını ilk gözleyen aydınlarımızdan biri olarak yola çıkıp Doğu-Batı çatışması görüşüne ulaşmış, bu çatışmada Doğu’nun, Doğu halklarının sözcülüğünü, savunuculuğunu yüklenmiş bir yazarımızdır. Kemal Tahir, yaşamı boyunca Osmanlı konusu üzerinde özellikle durmuştur. Osmanlı, bugün de sorunlarımızı anlamamızda, çıkar yolu bulmamızda önemli bir çıkış noktası oluşturmaktadır. Bu nedenle Kemal Tahir, Osmanlı’ya ilgi durmuş, konunun önemini bizlere anlatmaya çalışmıştır. Kemal Tahir’in yaşamı boyunca en fazla üzerinde durduğu konuların başında Batılılaşma ya da Batıcılaşma sorunu gelmektedir. Kemal Tahir’in önemi, ilk dönem yenileşme deneyimizdeki başarısızlıkları göz önünde tutarak Batı’nın 1960’lı yıllarda bize önerdiği açıklama ve tanımları oldukları gibi benimsemek yerine bu tanımları da sorgulamaya başlamasıdır.
First of all, Kemal Tahir is a great novelist. Kemal Tahir is a writer who, as one of our intellectuals who first observed the difference of our society from the West, reached the view of East-West conflict and assumed the spokesmanship and advocacy of the East and the peoples of the East in this conflict. Kemal Tahir has especially focused on the Ottoman subject throughout his life. The Ottoman Empire is still an important starting point for us to understand our problems and find a way out. For this reason, Kemal Tahir stopped interested in the Ottoman Empire and tried to explain the importance of the subject to us. Westernization or Westernization is one of the issues that Kemal Tahir focused on the most throughout his life. The importance of Kemal Tahir is that, considering the failures in our first period of innovation, he started to question these definitions instead of adopting the explanations and definitions offered to us by the West in the 1960s.
