Abstract

Abstract

This article aims to take a sociological snapshot of Gezi (Park) resistance which initially began as a Taksim-centered sit-in occupation driven by environmental- and urban-sensitive reflexes and shortly after evolved into the demand for resignation of the government and especially the prime minister and spread to several cities across Turkey. This study analyzes the resistance over the professional, demographic and ideological profiles of resisters, their class positions, demands and discourses and their models of organization and action, within the context of the “disengagement” and “continuity” theories within the new social movements literature. The hypothesis put forth in this article is that Gezi protest, which constitutes a new social movement, is class-based in a modern sense, stemming from the current conflicts of late capitalism and that it presents a number of continuities with the past social movements. However, the heterogeneous class, political and cultural composition of resisters and the resulting differences in demands and discourses that appeared have shown that the resistance cannot be analyzed only with reference to economic contradictions. Due to the necessity that class analysis should be performed in reference not only to economic capital but also to cultural capital, this study applies Bourdieu's "social field theory", dividing the deep and complex rationale of the resistance into "sub-fields" with knowable mechanisms and approaching it from this perspective.
